Food for the brain

Keep your brain on top form with the lowdown of the right foods to boost your brainpower!

It is no secret that setting up a business is stressful and if you intend on expanding your business, then staying on the ball and not losing focus of your goals is essential. It can be easy to ‘forget’ to eat, indeed many entrepreneurs say they don’t have time, but if you are in for the long-haul then maintaining optimum health must be a top priority otherwise it may lead to fatigue or even burn-out. In order to keep you in top form, here is a list of foods to boost your brainpower, increase your mental agility and improve your memory – it’s all about choosing the right foods.

Wholegrains: Research has shown that an intake of folic acid, vitamin B12 and B6, which can be found in a mix of wholegrain foods such as cereals, wheatbran, wheatgerm and wholewheat pasta, improves memory and recalling information.

Oily Fish: The essential omega-3 fatty acids, found in oily fish, as well as walnut oil and flaxseeds (linseeds) are high in DHA – a fatty acid crucial to the health of our nervous system. Low DHA levels have been linked to a high risks of developing Alzheimer's disease and memory loss. Fish contains iodine, which is known to improve mental clarity.

Sage: Sage has long had a reputation for improving memory and although most studies focus on sage as an essential oil, it could be worth adding fresh sage to your diet, too.

Blackcurrents and Blueberries: While evidence has shown that blueberry extract can improve short term memory loss, vitamin C, most prevalent in blackcurrants, has long been thought to have the power to increase mental agility.

Pumpkin seeds: Zinc, which is vital for enhancing memory and thinking skills can be found in pumpkin seeds and a handful provides all you need to get your recommended daily amount.
